Eric Balken grew up in Salt Lake City, building a connection to Utah’s mountains, rivers, and deserts at a young age. In his youth, Eric volunteered with local non-profits gaining experience in public land surveys, membership outreach, and grassroots organizing. Eric has been deeply involved with Colorado River policy for the past decade, helping spearhead multiple research and advocacy initiatives at GCI. Eric has a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies and Geography from the University of Utah and serves as an advisory on the Future of the Colorado Group

Joaquín Hortal is a biogeographer and community
ecologist working at the Museo Nacional de
Ciencias Naturales (Natural History Museum) of
the Spanish Scientific Council in Madrid. He also
collaborates with the Centre for Ecology,
Evolution and Environmental Changes of the
University of Lisbon, and the Department of
Ecology of the Federal University of Goiás in
Brazil, and Before he worked at the University of
the Azores, University of Copenhagen and Imperial College London.
He studies the effects of current and past
environmental conditions and ecological processes
on the geographic patterns of biodiversity, the
role of species niche and ecological interactions
in the organization of biological communities in
time and space, and the use and misuse of
biodiversity big data. He works with mosses, seed
plants, vertebrates and insects, and has been
studying the ecology and biogeography of dung beetles for more than 25 years.

Andy Kerr (andykerr@andykerr.net) is the Czar of The Larch Company (www.andykerr.net ) and consults on environmental and conservation issues. The Larch Company is a for-profit non-membership conservation organization that represents the interests of humans yet born and species that cannot talk. Kerr started is professional conservation career during the Ford Administration. He is best known for his two decades with the Oregon Wild (then Oregon Natural Resources Council), the organization best known for having brought you the northern spotted owl. Kerr began his conservation career during the Ford Administration. Through 2019, Kerr has been closely involved in with the establishment or expansion of 47 Wilderness Areas and 57 Wild and Scenic Rivers, 13 congressionally legislated special management areas, 15 Oregon Scenic Waterways, and one proclaimed national monument (and later expanded). He has testified before congressional committees on several occasions.
